On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake hit near Fukushima, Japan. This earthquake and the ensuing tsunami caused one of the worst nuclear catastrophes the world has ever seen. Its radioactive pollution is still washing up on Pacific Ocean coastlines to this day.

This disaster caused me to research the emergency response to the Fukushima meltdown. Why did the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant melt down after the engineers had it stabilized?

 

It was because the primary back-up power system put the massive cooling pumps on the battery back-up system. The electric power back-up to the back-up. Something no one had considered actually possible. Effectively the nuclear power plant was running on a giant UPS battery back-up system like you have with your computer.

When the batteries ran out of power three days later, the pumps shut down. Without constant cooling, the atomic piles melted down and created a global catastrophe.

With three days of battery back-up power, I began to wonder why they couldn't get the generators back on line and running.

It basically came down to contaminated fuel and damaged generators. Tepco, the Japanese company running the Diiachi Nuclear Power Plant, did not have access to adequate mobile fuel supplies and the generators to handle the cooling pumps electric load. A curious situation for one of the world's most technologically advanced nations.

It became apparent that there was not an easily delivered smart mobile fueling system in existance. So, I decided to invent one.
